Saturday's Blue Square South wrap

With four matches postponed due to waterlogged pitches on Saturday afternoon, a number of promotion hopefuls had the chance to close the gap on league leaders Lewes.

Basingstoke 3-1 Newport County

Basingstoke inched closer to the play-off zone with a comfortable win over fellow high-flyers Newport County at the Camrose Ground.

The visitors drew first blood after 10 minutes when Lee Fowler found the back of the net and they maintained their slender lead until the break.

The Dragons came out firing on all cylinders and equalised through defender Jason Bristow in the 50th minute.

A Tyrone Smith penalty on the hour gave the home side the lead and striker James Taylor rounded off a wonderful Basingstoke comeback with an 85th minute effort.

Bath City 2-0 Maidenhead Utd

The Romans claimed a play-off spot on Saturday afternoon with a comfortable win over strugglers Maidenhead United at Twerton Park.

Darren Edwards put the home side ahead after just four minutes and fellow frontman Dave Gilroy notched their second after 52 minutes.

Bath are now in fourth place with 32 points fr5om 18 fixtures while the Magpies slip down to 18th place with 18 points.

Braintree Town 0-0 Thurrock

Braintree Town were unable to make their home advantage count as they were held to a goalless draw by Thurrock at Cressing Road.

After this latest result, The Iron move up to 10th place with 27 points from 19 games while Thurrock sit in 16th place with 20 points from 17 fixtures.

Bromley 1-2 Eastleigh

The Spitfires kept their hopes of clinching promotion alive with a narrow win over Bromley at Hayes Lane.

The hosts broke the deadlock when Danny Hockton found the back of the net after 21 minutes but Eastleigh responded well to draw level through Jamie Brown eight minutes later.

Eastleigh claimed the lead un the 58th minute thanks to Anthony Rivere and managed to hold onto their slender lead until the final whistle.

Cambridge City 1-2 Hampton & Richmond

High-flying Hampton & Richmond Borough claimed all three points against Cambridge City to cut the gap on league leaders Lewes.

The visitors opened their account in the 22nd minute through Alan Inns only for Michael Gash to equalise on the half-hour mark with a well-placed free kick.

Dean Wells sealed the victory with a free kick of his own in the 51st minute to help his side maintain their promotion push.

Hayes & Yeading 2-1 Lewes

League leaders Lewes suffered their second successive defeat on Saturday with Hayes & Yeading collecting a valuable three points.

James Mulley broke the deadlock just before the half-time whistle and fellow midfielder Liam Collins added their second in the 47th minute.

Lewes' Paul Booth slotted home a 74th minute penalty but it was not enough as the home side managed to hold on claim a morale-boosting win.

Welling 0-0 Sutton Utd

Over 400 football fans turned up for this encounter but had little reason to cheer as the match ended in a goalless draw at Park View Road.

Chances were limited but Orlando Smith and Jackson Ohakam went closest for the home side.
