Lewes reclaimed pole position on the Blue Square South table after Eastbourne Borough were held to a draw by Weston-Super-Mare at Priory Lane on Saturday afternoon.
Basingstoke and Hayes & Yeading walked away with a vital point each as both teams attempted to secure their safety in the Blue Square South.
Both sides were fresh from defeats and eager to take control of the game - which resulted in a gritty near goalless first-half.
But Joel Ledgester broke the deadlock two minutes before the break to give the visitors the lead.
Michael Charles netted on the 66-minute mark to level the scores and ensure the troubled Dragons had a share of the spoils.
Newport County resurrected their push for a play-off place at Nyewood Lane - condemning Bognor Regis Town closer to the relegation battle.
The hosts enjoyed a three-point lead over third-from-bottom St Albans, but the Saints recorded a 1-0 win over Havant and Waterlooville - which places the Rocks in the midst of the drop-zone tussle.
Town managed to restrict County's attack in the first-half, but referee Lee Collins pointed to the penalty spot in favour of the visitors on 51 minutes.
Jason Bowen stepped up and made no mistake converting the spot-kick.
And it only got worse for the Rocks as Lee Fowler netted in the 64th minute to put the result beyond the home side.
Braintree Town advanced their chances of securing a play-off place after securing a vital victory against fellow contenders Bath City.
The result meant that Lee Patterson's charges leapfrogged City in the Blue Square standings and lie in sixth place, while the visitors have shuffled down to eight spot.
Bill Burgess gave the hosts an early lead with his 16th minute effort - a lead Town enjoyed going into the half-time interval.
And 56 minutes into the match, James Hawes made sure the Iron would be in right in the middle of the play-off mix.
Hampton & Richmond ousted play-off rivals Bromley at Hayes Lane to underline their promotion credentials.
The hosts will be reeling from the result which has greatly dented their play-off ambitions.
They now lie on 58 points, but both Newport City and Bath City hold the same amount of points, having played fewer games.
It was a great outcome for Alan Devonshire's charges though, as they have secured their spot in the top three.
The visitors had the game wrapped up within 20 minutes of kick-off following two early goals.
Ian Hodges opened the scoring in the 15th minute and a mere two minutes later, a Ryan Lake effort killed off the hosts.
Lewes revealed the form that saw them lead the Blue Square South standings for most of the season against Cambridge City and it earned them back the top spot.
A brilliant performance coupled with Eastbourne's draw with Weston-s-Mare saw Steve King's men restored to the South summit.
Stephen Robinson opened the scoring for the Rooks on the 26th minute mark, but it was quickly cancelled out.
Josh Simpson netted for the hosts four minutes later to level the scores. It was the only joy that City would extract from the game though, as Lewes tightened the screws on the game.
Matt Groves restored the visitors' lead after 33 minutes and Andrew Drury put the finishing touches on a fine performance after 59 minutes.
Thurrock added to struggling Dorchester's woes after securing a marginal victory at the Avenue Stadium.
David Bryant was the hero for the Fleet after his winning effort on the 63-minute mark.
The result places the Magpies second-from-bottom with only five points separating the team from rock-bottom Sutton United.
The visitors meanwhile secured a spot well into safety and moved up to 12th in the standings.
Weston Super Mare gained a vital point in their fight with the basement battlers after knocking Eastbourne Borough off the top of the Blue Square standings.
But in all honestly, the visitors lost the perfect opportunity to walk away with all three-points at Priory Lane after squandering an early lead.
Wilfried Domoraud netted Tony Ricketts' charges ahead after 18 minutes - a lead that stood until the 75st minute.
Paul Armstrong pulled the goal back for the hosts, before Patrick Harding handed them the lead five minutes later.
But Boro were denied the three points when Domoraud converted his second for the night to even the scores.
It means Eastbourne surrendered their summit spot to Lewes - who are one-point ahead of them having played less games.
Play-off rivals Eastleigh and Bishops Stortford cancelled each other out at Silverlake Stadium, but gained a valuable point each.
Both teams occupy a coveted play-off place with the hosts in fourth-place, three points ahead of fifth-placed Bishops.
The Spitfires are now level on points with third-placed Hampton and Richmond although they have played a game more.
With neither side able to beat the other's defences in a closely contested encounter - it provided the contenders with a taste of how difficult the play-offs will be.
Welling further distanced themselves from the relegation places with a narrow win over fellow strugglers Maidenhead United.
The Wings broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when Sam Gargan found the back of the net and they managed to hold on until the end for a morale-boosting victory.
Maidenhead now find themselves in 20th place with just 34 points from 36 fixtures.
The Saints boosted their chances of beating the drop with a narrow victory over Shaun Gale's Havant and Waterlooville at Clarence Park.
The hosts have been in unbeatable form of late and striker Paul Hakim's 33rd minute finish turned out to be enough to clinch the points.
They now find themselves in 18th place with 36 points from 37 fixtures and will need to keep their good form going if they wish to steer clear of the drop zone.
Rock-bottom Sutton United were unable to hold off the onslaught of promotion play-off hopefuls Fisher Athletic at Borough Sports Ground.
The Fish claimed the lead after 12 minutes thanks to midfielder Shaun Batt and doubled their tally on the half-hour mark courtesy of a Gavin Tomlin effort.
After this latest result, Sutton look certain relegation candidates while Fisher sit on the edge of the play-off places with 59 points from 37 fixtures.
