Saturday's Blue Square South wrap

Lewes clinched the league title with a victory over Dorchester in what was another exciting Saturday afternoon of Blue Square South football.

Bath City 2-3 Sutton United

Relegated Sutton United walked away from Twerton Park with the bragging rights and their pride restored after condemning Bath City to defeat.

Craig Dundas got the visitors off to the perfect start by giving them the lead in the 6th minute.

Sam Foley cancelled out the strike for the hosts on the 12-minute mark, before Warren McBean restored the U's cushion after 25 minutes.

The sizzling first-half action continued as McBean added his second of the night to make it three unexpected goals for Sutton.

But City did try to stage a fight back in the second-half, however only Phil Walsh was able to add to the hosts' tally and the visitors walked away with all the points.

The result provided a major blow to the Romans play-off hopes as Newport County and Fisher both recorded victories. That leaves John Relish's men three points adrift off the fifth and final play-off place.

Bishops Stortford 1-2 Fisher Athletic

Fisher Athletic moved into the play-off places with a pivotal win against former contenders Bishops Stortford at Woodside Park.

Shaun Batt began the visitors push early on as he struck in the 17th minute to give them the lead.

And Andrew McCollin doubled the lead giving the Fish a comfortable two-goal lead going into the second-half.

Neither side were able to penetrate goal wards after the interval, but Roy Essandoh managed to get a consolation goal for Bishops four minutes from time.

Wayne Burnett's men are now prettily perched in fourth-spot with two games still to play.

Hampton & Richmond 1-1 Bognor Regis Town

Bognor Regis Town secured another vital point in their battle to avoid relegation against high-flying Hampton & Richmond at the Beveree Stadium.

After a dour first-half Lawrence Yaku emerged as the hero for the visitors as he gave them an unlikely lead in the 51st minute.

But a mere 16 minutes later, the Beavers were back in the game after referee S Freerick awarded a penalty.

In-form Scott Chamberlain made no mistake from the spot and helped the hosts cement their place in the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Bognor enjoy a four-point gap over the bottom three in the basement battle.

Havant and Waterlooville 0-3 Maidenhead United

Maidenhead United secured a massive result against Havant and Waterlooville as the rout at Westleigh Park handed them a breather in the relegation struggle.

The visitors went ahead in the 9th minute courtesy of a Lee Newman effort and applied the pressure on the Hawks' goal throughout the game.

They were rewarded after 24 minutes when Carl Wilson-Dennis doubled the lead and the hosts had no chance getting back into the game as Manny Williams sealed the win in the 69th minute.

The three points sees the Magpies move up into 16th place - six points ahead of third-from-bottom Weston-S-Mare.

Hayes & Yeading 3-1 Cambridge City

Hayes & Yeading eased past mid-table rivals Cambridge City at Church Road to walk away with all the spoils.

On-fire Charlie Sheringham - hot off a hat-trick performance - gave the visitors the lead after 21 minutes.

But Ranbir Marwa put the hosts level a mere three minutes later.

Thereafter it was all pressure from Hayes and they were rewarded when Kieran Knight doubled the lead after 56 minutes.

And Joel Ledgester made the result certain on the 72-minute mark.

Lewes 2-0 Dorchester

Lewes clinched the Blue Square South title with an impressive 2-0 victory over Dorchester at the Dripping Pan.

The new league champions had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock.

Paul Booth was the man who set Lewes on their way when he netted on 67 minutes with a neat finish.

And the title was wrapped up in the final minute of the match when substitute Jean-Michel Sigere rose highest to meet the ball and head home to send the supporters into raptures.

Newport County 1-1 Eastbourne Borough

Eastbourne Borough strengthened their grip on second spot after a 1-1 draw with fellow play-off hopefuls Newport County.

Andy Gurney put the home side into the lead on 27 minutes when he slotted home from close range.

The goal acted as a massive boost for the home side as they went close on numerous occasions before the half-time whistle blew.

The second-half started with the visitors on top and they thoroughly deserved to equalise on 64 minutes.

Matt Crabb was the man credited with the goal which silenced the Newport Stadium crowd.

The equaliser set up a frantic final 20 minutes, with both sides pushing forward in waves. But it was to no avail as the match ended in a draw.

St Albans 3-2 Eastleigh

St Albans came out on top of a five-goal thriller against Eastleigh at Clarence Park.

Despite the home side eventually claiming the three-points, the visitors were the ones who went in to the lead.

Andrew Forbes put the away side ahead from the penalty spot on 21 minutes.

That was to be the only meaningful action from either side in what was a rather dire first period.

The second-half, however, was a totally different affair altogether as both sides came out on fire.

The home side managed to equalise on 61 minutes when Bradley Gray found the back of the net.

And it was 2-1 seconds later when Wasiu-Akanni Sunday netted.

The home side then wrapped up the points on 74 minutes when Akanni grabbed his second of the game.

The visitors managed a consolation goal on 80 minutes when Steven Watts scored, but it was not enough as the home defence shut up shop to secure the points.

Thurrock 1-1 Braintree Town

Thurrock and Braintree Town played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Ship Lane.

Both sides were keen to keep the tempo of the game as high as possible for much of the match, providing the fans in attendance with some pleasing action.

It was the visitors who took the lead in the 38th minute when Michael Shinn finished neatly from close range.

The blow so close to half-time for the home side did nothing to put them off as they continued to push forward in search of a goal.

But they had to wait until the 87th minute for that fully deserved goal.

Matt Bodkin was the man who netted after some impressive percentage football from the Thurrock midfield.

Weston-Super-Mare 0-1 Bromley

Bromley secured a top-half finish with a deserved 1-0 victory over struggling Weston-Super-Mare at the Woodspring Stadium.

The winning goal came in the third minute when Jack Haverson found the back of the net after some impressive play from the away side.

The hosts went in search of an equalising goal, but the visitors defended resolutely and held out for the three-points.
