Saturday's Blue Square South Wrap

Newport County extended their sizeable lead at the top of the Blue Square South standings, while second-placed Woking suffered defeat at the hands of play-off chasing Braintree Town.

Jamie Day's Welling United kept their play-off aspirations alive with a convincing victory over Bishop's Stortford at Woodside Park.

Tommy Whitnell broke the deadlock after just four minutes and fellow forward Lee Clarke doubled their advantage with a well struck penalty in the 49th minute.

On-loan Gillingham striker Andy Pugh further extended their lead three minutes later and midfielder Jack Parkinson put the finishing touches on a solid team performance, scoring Welling's fourth in the 81st minute.

Rob Garvey's Braintree Town closed the gap on the play-off places after edging past high-flying Woking at Cressing Road Stadium.

The first half ended goalless with neither side able to find the all-important breakthrough, but the deadlock was finally broken when striker George Purcell popped up in the 68th minute to slot home the winning goal.

Newport County picked up yet another victory on the road after edging out Bromley in a five-goal thriller at the Courage Stadium.

The Exiles drew first blood when defender Paul Cochlin found the back of the net in the 21st minute and doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute thanks to midfielder Charlie Henry.

Newport were then given a big scare as goals from midfielder Ryan Hall (61) and striker Warren McBean (65) levelled the scoreline in the space of three hectic minutes.

However, Newport proved just why they are top of the table as Sam Foley put his side back in front with 69th minute effort.

Eastleigh saw their play-off aspirations take a knock as they suffered a narrow defeat to Shaun Gale's Havant & Waterlooville at Silverlake Stadium.

Midfielder Steven Walker found the back of the net in the 63rd minute and it turned out to be enough for the Wings to claim all three points.

Adie Britton's Bath City are still in the hunt for a play-off spot after seeing off the challenge of St Albans City at Clarence Park.

The Romans got off to flying start as defender Chris Holland gave them the lead after just five minutes and the result was sealed when midfielder Lewis Hogg found the net in the 79th minute.

Ashley Vickers' Dorchester Town boosted their chances of beating the drop with a 2-0 victory over rock-bottom Weston-super-Mare at Woodspring Stadium.

Striker Ryan Moss opened their account in the 10th minute and Cameroonian Jules Emati-Emati doubled their tally with a 55th minute effort.

Jerry Gill's Weymouth gave their supporters a glimmer of hope with a comfortable win against fellow strugglers Lewes at the Wessex Stadium.

Gill was appointed as Weymouth's new manager in midweek and he got the perfect response for his first game in charge.

Welsh forward Josh Llewellyn put the Terras ahead with a 17th minute effort but Lewes drew level just five minutes later when midfielder Joe Keehan found the net from the penalty spot.

Weymouth renewed their efforts after the half-time break and reclaimed the lead through on-loan Macclesfield Town midfielder Stephen Reed in the 58th minute.

And the result was put beyond doubt when striker Jake Reid found the back of the net in the 70th minute.
