Saturday's Blue Square South Wrap

Braintree Town failed to apply some pressure on league leaders Newport County as they drew 1-1 with visiting Bromley on Saturday.

An own goal by Mark Jones (21) was cancelled out by Matt Game's 34th minute equaliser for The Iron.

Chelmsford closed in on the front-runners with a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Lewes at the Dripping Pan. The Clarets prevailed thanks to goals by Rob Edmans and Dave Rainford on either side of the break.

Eastleigh endured a horrific day at the office as they were thumped 8-2 by Thurrock at Silverlake Stadium. Striker Leon McKenzie netted a first-half hat-trick, while David Bryant (17, 45) and Matt Bodkin (69, 90) both completed braces to go with an own goal by Brett Poate. Peter Adeniyi and Richard Gillespie struck in the second half for the hapless hosts.

It was a similarly dominant display by Welling as they pummeled Woking 5-0 at Kingfield Stadium. The on-loan Andy Pugh also bagged a hat-trick, while Tommy Whitnell and Anthony Finn did their bit with goals in the second-half.

It was a tense finish at Wheatsheaf Park as Staines Town edged St Albans in a 4-3 thriller. Scott Taylor kicked things off with a 21st minute opener for the hosts. Ian Dunn equalised seven minutes later and then Drew Peters nudged the Saints ahead just past the half-hour mark. However, Taylor struck again in the 35th minute and was then joined on the scoring sheet by teammate Mazin Ahmad on the stroke of half-time. After the break, Leroy Griffiths (66) got the fourth before Gary Cohen surfaced with nine minutes remaining to ensure some anxious final moments for the home crowd.

Weymouth's woes continued as they went 2-0 down to Bath City at Twerton Park. The bottom-placed club were sunk by quick-fire strikes from Adam Connolly and Darren Edwards in the 74th and 75th minute respectively.

Maidenhead United secured a surprise point as they held fourth-placed Dover to a creditable 1-1 draw at Perry's Crabble Stadium. Midfielder Sam Collins scored a 51st minute equaliser to cancel out Adam Birchall's (2) early opener for the hosts.
