Craig Farrell
Rushden & Diamonds kept their play-off hopes alive with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Hayes & Yeading at Church Road on Saturday.
A brace from Craig Farrell, a goal a piece from Aaron O'Connor and Lee Tomlin and own goals by Tom Cadmore and Steve Basham saw the home side suffer an humiliating defeat.
United got off to the worst possible start when Cadmore put the ball into his own net in the third minute as he attempted to clear a Jefferson Louis cross.
Tomlin doubled his side's advantage in the 17th minute with a fantastic chip over the head of United stopper Simon Overland.
The Diamonds stamped their authority on the game just before the interval when O'Connor headed home Tomlin's corner to make it 3-0.
Things went from bad to worse for Garry Haylock's charges when Basham netted United's second own goal of the evening as he headed Tomlin's free-kick into his own net.
Substitute Farrell then rubbed salt into the wounds when he netted twice in five minutes.
The first came in the 71st minute when he found some space in behind the United defence and chipped the ball over Overland and the second came from a superb strike from 20 yards out which left the stopper with no chance.
Scott Fitzgerald pulled a goal back for the home side when he lobbed Rushden goalkeeper Dale Roberts in the 80th minutes to grab a consolation goal.
