Eastbourne Boro 5-0 Hayes & Yeading

Eastbourne Borough responded emphatically to their 4-2 loss at Tamworth on the opening day of the Blue Square Bet Premier by thrashing Hayes & Yeading 5-0 on Tuesday.

Richard Pacquette netted a brace with Gary Elphick, Matt Crabb and James Taylor also amongst the goals at Priory Lane.

Hayes, meanwhile, were a shadow of the team that beat Bath City on Saturday and must now find a way to prepare ahead of their clash against promotion contenders Grimsby Town on Saturday.

Borough pressed their opponents from the first whistle to the last with winger Ross Treleaven causing Hayes all sorts of problems down the right-hand side.

It was Matt Langston though, who was credited with the first assist after he found Gary Elphick with a header from a corner for the striker to head home after just 31 minutes.

Ahmed Deen and Elliot Buchanan threatened to cancel out their lead almost immediately but the latter smashed his volley over the crossbar.

More positive play from the home side kept Garry Haylock's men pegged back and a second goal on the stroke of half time was just reward as Treleaven found Pacquette in space to fire home from close range, with his shot deflecting in off the post.

Treleaven and Pacquette combined again in the 52nd minute but this time the striker's effort was cleared off the line.

The visitors tried in vain to apply more structure to their set up in the second period but it failed to keep out the Borough attack.

Treleaven picked out Matt Crabb on the edge of the box, who beat Hayes goalkeeper Lee Harrison with a deft left-footed finish after 71 minutes.

And a minute later it was 4-0 as James Taylor got his head to a well-placed Pacquette cross.

Hayes looked for some consolation with James Mulley and Ben Wright trying their luck from distance but it was Eastbourne who found a fifth. Substitute Matt Smart located Pacquette from the right-hand side and the striker made no mistake with a curling shot into the top right corner of the net.

Eastbourne Borough bookings: None.

Hayes & Yeading bookings: None.
