Gateshead 2-3 Newport County

A late surge from Newport County saw them come back from two goals behind to beat Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Gateshead 3-2 on Saturday.

The Tynesiders seemed to be in control around the half-time break as they pulled two goals clear thanks to strikes from Liam Hatch and Jon Shaw.

However, Elliott Buchanan reduced the deficit for the Exiles before goals from Sam Foley and Jake Harris led the visitors to victory.

After a closely contested 45 minutes, the hosts finally opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time when Hatch found the back of the net.

Ian Bogie's side looked comfortably in control of proceedings as they extended their lead in the 53rd minute through Shaw.

The comeback, however, kicked off only four minutes later as Buchanan made it 2-1 with his 57th-minute strike.

A two-goal salvo in stoppage time shocked the Tynesiders as the visitors sneaked ahead thanks to an equaliser from Foley, who scored on the rebound after his spot-kick was initially saved, and a Harris winner, which he found deep into injury time after the home side's Jamie Chandler was sent off.

The result sees Grimsby slip to seventh in the standings, while Newport County remain in the danger zone with 26 points from 29 games.

Gateshead bookings: Curtis, Hatch, Chandler (sent off)

Newport County bookings: Warren.
