Stockport County 3-2 Barrow

Stockport County managed to climb out of the Blue Square Bet Premier relegation zone as they edged Barrow 3-2 at Edgeley Park on New Year's Day.

The Hatters entered the match on the back of a 1-0 defeat to the Bluebirds, but this time Jim Gannon's men managed to overturn that result in the reverse fixture on Sunday.

The hosts opened the scoring after just 10 minutes as Sam Sheridan unleashed a 25-yard volley which flew into the back of the net to hand the striker his first goal for the club.

Shortly after the hour mark County found themselves 2-0 up, this time Joe Connor getting on the scoresheet by netting his first senior goal with a tap-in after the Barrow goalkeeper Danny Hurst could only parry Ryan Fraughan's shot.

Two minutes later and the hosts could have made it 3-0, but this time the visiting shot-stopper showed great athleticism to deny Tom Elliott's diving header from a Fraughan free-kick.

Eleven minutes after the restart Barrow managed to pull a goal back as Adam Boyes flicked the ball on to Richie Baker who duly headed home on 56 minutes.

Just after the hour mark the visitors completed the comeback as Stockport captain Danny O'Donnell was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, and Baker stepped up to slot home his second of the game.

However, with just six minutes remaining County regained the lead as Aaron Cole was brought down by Paul Smith in the box, and Sheridan made no mistake from the resulting penalty to hand his side the valuable points.

The result left Stockport in 19th place, one point above the drop zone, while Barrow are in 12th on 38 points.
