Woking beat fellow strugglers Barrow in the Blue Square Premier on Saturday afternoon to edge themselves out of the relegation zone.
On-loan midfielder Oliver Bozanic scored the only goal for the Cards, but the home side spurned many more chances and were relieved to come away with the win.
Woking boss Phil Gilchrist was intent on attacking a Barrow side that have won just once in their last 15 league games and set out a very forward-thinking 4-3-3 formation after drawing their last game against Burton Albion 0-0.
Bozanic's first chance came as early as the opening minute as he latched onto a loose ball from a corner, but he only succeeding in smashing the ball against the crossbar.
The home side hit the woodwork again in the 11th minute as Wilfried Domoraud beat his man down the left flank before forcing keeper Alan Martin into a save, but as the ball rebounded kindly back to the attacker, he headed his effort onto the post.
Woking finally made their pressure tell in the 22nd minute with their first goal in six games, albeit via a deflection. Bozanic hit his shot well, from 20 yards, after the ball had fallen kindly for him on the edge of the area, the deviation wrong-footing the keeper and ended up in the back of the net.
Carlos Logan provided Barrow with their best real goalscoring chance in the 29th minute as he headed against the upright from an inswinging Mark Boyd corner while any one of the Bluebirds' strikers might have made more of a corner, five minutes later, when the ball was allowed to travel across the face of Woking's goal unchallenged.
Normal play was resumed with Woking on the attack again, but they continued to make hard work of their opportunities. Rob Elvins headed over the bar in the 39th minute after an inch-perfect cross by Bozanic when it looked easier to score.
The visitors enjoyed more possession in the second half in the form of quick breaks, with on-loan Scunthorpe winger Peter Winn's pace providing the outlet down the left flank but he too way unable to convert chances into goals.
Substitute Goma Lambu forced Martin to tip the ball over his goal after his introduction in the 64th minute while Domoraud sensed he was in on goal in the 80th minute before Paul Jones made a superb tackle to thwart the frustrated striker.
The last ten minutes were nervy for the hosts and Barrow tried to take advantage of the Cards profligacy but there were to be no late surprises as Woking held on for the three points to lift them to 36 points in 19th spot. Barrow sit third from bottom in the table after Grays Athletic's 2-1 win at home to Altrincham.
