Northwich 2-0 Woking

Relegation-threatened Northwich Victoria gave their supporters reason to celebrate on Tuesday night after recording a morale-boosting victory over fellow strugglers Woking at Victoria Stadium.

The Vics remain second-from-bottom but the three points gained against the Cardinals has granted them a stay of execution, until the weekend at least.

Woking had a glorious chance to open the scoring in the seventh minute but striker Wilfried Domoraud missed the target with a shot from deep inside the penalty area.

Both sides were struggling to create clear-cut chances but the hosts got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 24th minute.

Joel Byrom's inviting free kick was met by Simon Grand in the penalty box and the defender powered a header into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Fellow defender Danny Meadowcroft missed the target with a 40th minute header from deep inside the penalty area, and Woking's Kelvin Bossman forced goalkeeper Ryan Clarke into a save three minutes later.

The visitors continued to create chances after the break but their lack of cutting edge up front, ultimately led to their downfall.

Northwich doubled their tally in the 78th minute when Luke Horrocks was the first to ounce on a loose ball and tap home from close range.

Northwich bookings: None.

Woking bookings: None.

Ref: S Duncan (Newcastle).

Att: 450.
