Altrincham 0-1 Stevenage

Stevenage moved within three points of promotion to the Football League by ousting Altrincham 1-0 at Moss Lane on Wednesday night.

Substitute Charlie Griffins netted an 83rd-minute winner for Boro to lift them four points clear of second-placed Luton, with a game in hand.

In a tense affair, the hosts were the better team going forward with Chris Senior heading onto the cross bar in the first-half.

After the restart, Boro gained in confidence but Graham Heathcote's charges were determined in defence and snuffed out countless attacks.

Nicky Clee then came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when his deflected strike from 30 yards rebounded off the post for a Robins corner in the 65th minute.

The game turned 17 minutes later when Griffin, who came on for Yemi Odubade, pounced from close-range after Russell Saunders spilled a shot from Tim Sills.

The visitors held onto their slender lead for the crucial win and they can now wrap up the title on Saturday if they defeat Kidderminster or if the Hatters lose to 13th-placed Altrincham.

Altrincham booked: None.

Stevenage booked: Bridges.

Att: 907.

Ref: Mark Brown (East Yorkshire).
