York 3-0 Barrow

York City beat Barrow at Bootham Crescent on Tuesday night thanks to Richard Brodie's double salvo and a late strike from Michael Gash.

Martin Foyle's outfit moved ahead of Rushden & Diamonds in the Blue Square Premier courtesy of the result while the men from Cumbria are 17th, a mere three points clear of the drop zone.

Foyle blasted his players following their 3-1 defeat at struggling Eastbourne over the weekend and although the visitors dominated swathes of the first half, it was Barrow old-boy Brodie who broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval.

The Bluebirds failed to clear a corner from Chris Carruthers who found Brodie with his second bite at the cherry and the league's leading scorer headed the home side into the lead.

But it could have been very different because Barrow seemed to be in control during the opening periods of the match. However, Andy Bond spurned their best chance by hitting a weak shot straight at goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

After the interval the Bluebirds had a few half-chances through Nick Chadwick's aerial prowess but he failed to beat Ingham with his headers.

Then, around the hour mark there was an angry confrontation which resulted in bookings for five players.

After play got under way following this stoppage, Tim Deasy made a fine save from Alex Lawless' effort to keep Barrow in the game.

But with seven minutes left on the clock Brodie notched up his second of the game and his 28th of the season with another headed goal.

Foyle then withdrew Brodie and another former Barrow player Michael Rankine with Richard Pacquette and Gash their replacements.

The latter went on to add a third goal in the 90th minute by driving a hard and low shot past Deasy.

Gash came close twice in the closing stages too but he saw his nifty chip fly over the crossbar while Deasy made a sharp stop to limit the damage for Barrow.

York bookings: Meredith, Rankine, Mackin.

Barrow bookings: Rutherford, Hulbert.

Ref: Scott Duncan (Tyne & Wear).

Att: 2,154.
