Histon 2-2 Barrow

A jittery Histon secured their Blue Square Premier status with a dramatic draw against Barrow on Saturday.

The Stutes knew a point would be enough to stave off relegation but with ten minutes remaining on the clock they were losing 2-1 while Eastbourne, Gateshead and Forest Green Rovers' results were also going against them.

However, Paul Jones' own goal in stoppage time made the score 2-2, much to the delight of the Bridge Road faithful.

Earlier Glen Southam gave Alan Lewer's men the lead in the 26th minute by converting a penalty won by Lee Smith.

The score remained unchanged at the interval but the Bluebirds came out firing and levelled matters in the 46th minute when Nick Chadwick steered home James Owen's flick-on.

Substitute Simon Wiles then sent shockwaves through Cambridgeshire with a lovely curling strike in the 53rd minute to give Barrow the lead.

Heading into the closing stages of the match the scoreline left the home team in grave trouble and this was compounded by the fact that their relegation rivals were - at that time - securing the results they desired.

Providence did not seem to be on Histon's side either as Nathaniel Knight-Percival hit the crossbar before Charlie Sheringham's header was cleared off the goal-line.

But in the 91st minute Histon pulled level when Jones headed into his own net giving the Stutes the vital point they needed to avoid the drop.

When all was said and done Lewer's men finished the season in 18th, just one point clear of 21st-placed Forest Green Rovers who were relegated along with Ebbsfleet.
