Rushden & Diamonds 2-1 Lewes

Rushden & Diamonds's consigned bottom-club Lewes to their 15th straight defeat when they beat them 2-1 at Nene Park on Tuesday night.

The writing was on the wall as early as the second minute for the Rooks after Marcus Kelly produced some good work down the left wing before crossing in a perfect low cross which Rob Wolleaston controlled before slotting the ball home.

But Lewes sprung a surprise when they fought their way back into the game just four minutes later when a lapse in concentration saw Andy Burgess give the ball away and Rhys Henry slot home from a narrow angle.

However, the Diamonds dominated from there on in and Marcus Kelly threatened on a few occasions with a number of crosses which caused havoc amongst the Rooks defence.

Jake Beecroft and Michael Rankine looked dangerous for the Diamonds and had several good chances in the first period, but they failed to convert their chances.

The Diamonds started the second-half the same way they had ended the first and it wasn't long before they were in front again after defender Simon Downer was pulled back by Chris Breach and a penalty awarded.

Michael Rankine made no mistake from the spot-kick to make it 2-1.

Rushden were on top until the final whistle and although Lewes had some chances to equalise, they were few and far between as Garry Hill's side held on for the win.

Rushden & D'monds bookings: Wolleaston.

Lewes bookings: Wilkinson.
