The Dripping Pan
Lewes won their second game in a row, continuing a gradual improvement in form that started when they were beyond hope of avoiding relegation.
It was thanks to the heroics of keeper Rikki Banks in the 14th minute that the Rooks were not on the back foot early on. Cliff Akurang muscled into space and fired off a shot. The striker must have thought he had scored but Banks made an excellent save, redirecting the ball over the bar with his outstretched fingers.
Anthony Barness then brought Akurang down in the box and Stephen Reed stepped up to take the resulting penalty. Banks guessed which way to go and made another important save.
Lewes rallied as a demoralised Weymouth took their foot off the gas, but the home side seemed unable to break into their opponents area. They were forced to take speculative shots from the outfield.
But in the 69th minute, a cross from Luke Rooney was met in the air by Chris Breach, who nodded it into the back of the net.
Weymouth scrambled for an equalizer but despite getting forward in numbers, they failed to pull a goal back.
Late in the game, their misery was complete when the referee sent off Marcus Browning for a second bookable offence.
Lewes Bokings: Wheeler, Rooney.
Weymouth Bookings: Collins, Critchell, Reed, Browning ( Sent off ).
Ref: M Stewart.
Att: 456.
