Gordon Boateng has quit his role as assistant-manager to Mark Simpson at Blue Square South club Bishop's Stortford in order to allow the money saved on his expenses to go into a budget for new players.
The 28-year-old will become part of the club's scouting network.
Boateng told the Herts and Essex Observer: "My decision was based on giving something back to the playing budget. You cannot rely just on the board.
"I want players who want to play for the club and not for the money and players who want to play at this level.
"Youngsters can come in but it is a big jump from the reserves and youth football to play Blue Square week in, week out.
"I will be looking at other players at this level."
