Eastbourne 0-2 Cambridge Utd

Cambridge United eased the pressure on manager Martin Ling with a fairly comfortable win against strugglers Eastbourne Borough at Priory Lane.

First half goals from Robbie Willmott and Wayne Gray put the visitors in a commanding position and the Eastbourne were unable to fashion a reply as the Cambridge defence proved too strong to breach.

The U's made a flying start to the encounter as Willmott rose unmarked at the back post to head home Danny Wright's inviting cross after just three minutes of play.

Cambridge defender Dave Partridge was celebrating on 23 minutes when he headed home from a Willmott cross but the referee halted play and awarded Eastbourne a free-kick for a foul in the box.

However, they were not to be denied in the 32nd minute when Willmott surged into the box from the left flank before finding Gray with a neat pass and forward had no problem converting from six yards.

Cambridge were surely expecting more of the same after the break they but they faced a fired up Eastbourne, who piled on the pressure for extended periods.

Eastbourne Skipper Gary Elphick had the best chance of the half but his headed effort was cleared off the line James Jennings having already beaten goalkeeper Danny Naisbitt.

In the end, Naisbitt was rarely tested and Cambridge held firm to claim all three points and keep a clean sheet.

Eastbourne bookings: None.

Cambridge bookings: Jennings, Saah, Wright.

Ref: Tim Robinson (West Sussex).

Att: 983.
