Holdsworth lauds strong squad

Newport County beat Staines with a goal in the final minute in just one of a handful of games to take place in the Blue Square this weekend.

Dean Holdsworth's side are now 12 points clear of Dover at the top of the South table with Thurrock and Woking a further three points adrift.

Charlie Henry gave his side all three points with a well-taken strike in difficult conditions with Holdsworth admitting he was concerned about the tie being played.

He told Wales Online: "I didn't want the game to go ahead. I knew that my side would struggle on that surface. In fact, I knew both sides would struggle and that proved to be the case."

But the County boss had plenty of praise for his players although he stopped short of admitting that the title was a foregone conclusion.

"But we have about six players in the team who are match-winners and it was a great strike from Charlie to win the game.

"There is still plenty of work to do here and the players will go again this week.

"I don't think we've got a foot in the door (regards the title).

"We're top of the league and we know teams will work harder against us.

"But it's one of the strongest dressing rooms I have ever been in."
